Around Europe. Lonely in a Borderless Community describes a journey the author, Harald Innbjør, undertakes at the start of his retirement. A busy and demanding family and working life has never left room for a trip like this. Now the time has come to get to know his own continent better – the continent that the small country of Norway is part of, and on which it depends entirely.
'I have long wanted to know more about this continent. I have particularly wondered about the many conflicts and wars between European countries, and what they have led to. Above all: which events explain the borders between the countries of this continent today, and how has the EU project unfolded?'
He chooses to travel alone, both to test his own tolerance for loneliness and to be able to reflect on his own life story without too many distractions. The chance, brief encounters and conversations along the way are all the more joyful and energising.
In all, the author travels through 13 countries, camps at 33 sites and visits hundreds of museums, historic buildings, sights and walking trails. The book can be read from cover to cover, or dipped into for inspiration for journeys you are planning – or for tips on places you have not yet thought of visiting.
